Fourteen

I pushed off him and this time he didn’t fight me. I looked around for my underwear until my eyes landed on the shredded scraps of fabric. Shaking my head, I pulled on my jeans and sweater without underwear.

Mike was still lying on the floor when I turned around. He was staring up at me, fully content with being naked. “It’s a little late for that isn’t it?”

I took a deep breath. Yeah, it was. I’d already slept with him. But that didn’t mean I would do it again.

“It’s not gonna happen again.”

“Why the fuck not, Lexi? You know we’re good together. You can’t honestly tell me any other man has ever felt as good inside you, bare inside you, as that did. I saw fucking stars. I know you did, too.”

“Yeah, I did,” I admitted. He felt good. The sex was never the issue though. And he knew it. “It’s sex though, Mike. And you’re still my boss.”

Mike got to his feet and tugged on his clothes with sharp, angry movements. He pushed his feet through his jeans and walked into my kitchen, yanking open the fridge. He snatched a bottle of water and chugged half of it before finally facing me.

“Why is that such an issue? Yes, I’m your boss. As of ten days ago. We’ve been together for a year, Lexi. We’re not together because I’m your boss. That’s independent of our relationship. Why does it matter?”

“It matters to me,” I said softly, knowing he didn’t understand.

“But why, Lex? Who cares? It’s not going to affect anything so what difference does it make?”

“What will people think, Mike? What will they say when they find out about us?”

“Who cares?”

“I care dammit. I care. I don’t want everyone at work thinking I’m fucking the boss so he’ll give me a promotion. Shit, Luke knows about us now. How long do you think it’ll be before everyone else finds out too? Luke owes neither of us anything, and after the way you talked to him tonight we’ll be lucky if the whole plant doesn’t know about us by Monday!”

“So this is my fault?”

“No,” I said calmly, shaking my head. “It’s not your fault. It’s mine. I never should have kept this going for so long. We should have split up a long time ago. I’ve never stayed with anyone this long.”

“Because we’re good together, Lexi. It’s not just sex. Not for me. You say it is, but it’s not. It hasn’t been for a long time.”

“What about Yvonne?”

Mike shook his head and ran a hand through his hair. It stuck up at the ends, a look that was so foreign for him, but sexy nonetheless.

“I told you. Nothing is going on with Yvonne. I told her I’m seeing someone else. Even though I knew you were upset with me because I didn’t tell you about the job, I still thought of us as together. Even if we weren’t together, I wouldn’t want her. She’s a stick figure, a stiff breeze could blow her away.
